THE REALITY OF AMERICAN DREAM! (TAKE ONE)
Personal struggle Journey
by Suparna Chafekar, California.
Before moving to The States Suparna faced a lot of criticism as a normal Indian who comes to the land of liberty hears!
“Oh! America! It’s an Overrated country though!”
“Amusing that henceforth you might have an extravagant lifestyle”
“Oh! There comes our ‘NRI’”
“Don’t forget your Roots”
When Family / Friends pass such judgment it leaves you dry! And takes a toll on your mental health!
Eventually, Suparna moved to the states in her early 20s, leaving her family behind and not knowing anyone, she began her adventure in this new world!
Excerpts From Suparna’s Interview with MOMSHUBBUB
She discussed her Struggle Journey
As a First Generation Traveler!
The Reality is that nobody hands you anything as soon as you get out of the airplane.
The struggles that people go through living in the US are somehow ignored.
I still recall my First day in the states! excited, terrified, homesick and a little bit overwhelmed.
Reality struck me hard when my school started and experienced a financial crunch.I didn’t want to ask for money from my parents.
But how do I pay my rent? Looking for a job was the only solution! And I got one!
My life was not even close to the “extravagant lifestyle” which I was hearing from the past so many months. Instead I was sleeping on a comforter and working shifts as a receptionist while managing my coursework.
My responsibilities as a receptionist were not only working at the front desk but also folding the laundry, doing maintenance rounds, cleaning restrooms, vacuuming the floor, trust me nothing about my “NRI” life was overrated.
Was I mentally exhausted? Was I homesick? Hell yeah! I used to cry at night thinking about Aai Baba(my parents) and then cried myself to sleep.
Days went by, graduated from school, and found a new job in Chicago. Again back to square one – new place, new people but the same old “Immigrant Battle”.
